Availability: invite only for Indian businesses
On the India pricing page the Standard plan button reads "Request an invite". Stripe's docs state that Stripe is available by invite only in India, that businesses from India cannot sign up for a new account through the website, and that it currently supports a select number of businesses with a focus on international expansion. The support article adds that active Stripe accounts in India continue to be supported, and that invites are requested through Stripe's sales team. No timeline is published.
For selling abroad, the docs titled Accept international payments from India set these conditions:
- The account must be a registered Indian business (sole proprietorship, limited liability partnership or company). It cannot be an individual.
- If you sell physical goods you must provide a valid Importer Exporter Code (IEC). For services the IEC is optional, unless you accept international American Express payments or take benefits under India's Foreign Trade Policy.
- You opt in to exports during the account application and choose one RBI transaction purpose code for the account.
- Every international payment needs the customer's name, a billing address with a two-letter country code and a charge description, plus a shipping address for physical goods.
Mainly domestic or mainly international: what is charged
Stripe's support article for Indian cross-border sellers describes two ways to charge overseas cards. Which one you choose decides the rate.
| Mainly domestic | Mainly international | |
|---|---|---|
| Presentment currency | INR. The customer sees an INR charge on the statement | 135+ currencies on Visa and Mastercard, USD on American Express |
| Processing fee | 3% per successful charge | 4.3% per successful charge |
| Currency conversion | The customer may be charged a conversion fee by the issuing bank | Additional 2% if required |
| Extra documents for exporters | None | Purpose code and IEC required. Payment advice is provided |
| Settlement to your Indian bank | INR only | INR only |
The billing unit is one successful charge. Stripe's pricing FAQ says there are no fees for issuing card refunds on standard pricing, but the processing and currency conversion fees from the original transaction are not returned. Stripe's payout docs say payouts in India are always automatic and daily. The number of days to settlement for India was not readable on the page, so it is not quoted.
Fee formula with an illustrative overseas order
The order values are ILLUSTRATIVE. Replace them with your own.
- Stripe fee = charge amount × the rate for that card and currency
- GST = Stripe fee × 18%. Stripe says GST is not charged on processing fees for any single card transaction with a value up to INR 2,000
- Total cost = Stripe fee + GST
| Illustrative charge to an overseas Visa card | Rate | Fee | GST on fee | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹10,000 presented in INR | 3% | ₹300 | ₹54 | ₹354, or 3.54% |
| ₹1,500 presented in INR | 3% | ₹45 | Not charged, under INR 2,000 | ₹45 |
| Priced in USD, no conversion fee applied | 4.3% | 4.3% of charge | 0.774% of charge | About 5.07% of charge |
| Priced in USD, conversion fee applied | 4.3% + 2% | 6.3% of charge | 1.134% of charge | About 7.43% of charge |
We do not convert USD to rupees here, because the rate changes daily. Rupees received = foreign price × the exchange rate applied on the day, minus the Stripe fee and GST. Since settlement to an Indian bank is in INR only, ask Stripe whether the 2% conversion line applies to your charges.
How Stripe connects to Convo360 with your own account
Convo360 is BYOK. You use your own Stripe account, the customer pays on a Stripe-hosted page and Stripe pays out to your bank. Convo360 never holds the money and adds zero markup. Your plan is billed separately (see pricing).
- Open Integrations and add Stripe with your own account keys. Keys are encrypted at rest. The integrations docs list the payment gateways.
- In the Flow Builder, add the payment link step after the customer confirms the order. For Stripe it creates a hosted Checkout link for any amount and currency. Map the amount, description and customer fields.
- Fill the description every time, because Stripe requires a charge description on international payments. In a test payment, check that the hosted page collects the name and billing address Stripe asks for.
- The link works in a WhatsApp chat, in the website chat widget, and on a voice call.
Payment triggers in Convo360 work with Razorpay today. To continue a flow after a Stripe payment, the webhooks docs describe inbound webhooks that accept a POST from a third-party tool and map its fields into flow variables. Test this with your own account before relying on it.
Razorpay for India and Stripe for overseas customers
Some businesses keep two gateways connected and let the flow choose. This is a neutral description, not a recommendation.
- Indian customers. Razorpay's pricing page lists UPI, netbanking, wallets and cards under one published platform fee, and sign-up is open subject to KYC. See Razorpay charges for WhatsApp payment links.
- Overseas customers. Stripe's India account is positioned by Stripe for international expansion, supports presentment in 135+ currencies, and exporters receive a payment advice by email for each export payout. It needs an invite and export details.
In a flow, a Condition block on the {{phone}} system variable can send numbers with India's 91 country code to the Razorpay payment link block and everyone else to the Stripe link. A D2C brand shipping abroad, or a consultant billing overseas clients, can run both from one WhatsApp number. The Razorpay payment link how-to covers the domestic branch.
Ways to keep Stripe costs down that the fee table supports
- Present in INR where customers accept it. The published rate is 3% instead of 4.3%, though the customer's own bank may add a conversion fee and will show an INR charge.
- Prevent disputes. Each dispute received costs ₹1,000.00. Stripe notes that 3D Secure is not mandatory for international customers and that you may see a higher dispute rate, so send a clear order summary and confirmation in chat.
- Avoid refunds you can prevent. Original processing and conversion fees are not returned, so let the bot confirm the order before it sends the link.
- Ask about custom pricing if your volumes are large. Stripe says eligibility varies by market.
