Which GPT-6 model should run your WhatsApp chatbot?
For a WhatsApp or web chat bot, pick the smallest, fastest model in the GPT-6 range that answers your questions correctly, not the most capable one. Chat replies are short and the knowledge comes from your own documents, so reasoning depth matters far less than speed and cost per message.
- OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and Luna in September 2026, followed by GPT-6.1 Sol, alongside a GPT-6 family model guide.
- Several GPT-5 generation models were deprecated on 1 October 2026 for removal on 1 April 2027, so staying put has an expiry date.
- A WhatsApp reply is two or three sentences. Capability beyond that is paid for and never used.
- Latency matters more than benchmark scores, because a chat reply that takes six seconds reads as broken.
- Prompt caching cuts the cost of a long system prompt that repeats on every message, which is most support bots.
Why the biggest model is usually the wrong choice
The instinct when a new model range appears is to use the strongest one available. For a WhatsApp bot that is almost always a mistake, and it is worth understanding why before comparing variants.
A customer support reply on WhatsApp is short. It answers one question, in two or three sentences, often from information you have already supplied in a knowledge base. The hard part of the job is not reasoning. It is retrieving the right fact and phrasing it politely in the customer's language.
Frontier models are built for the opposite shape of problem: long documents, multi step planning, code. You pay for that depth on every single message, including the forty messages a day that just say the shop opens at ten. Over a month of real traffic the difference is substantial, and nobody reading the replies could tell you which model wrote them.
What OpenAI has actually shipped
Through September and October 2026 OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, followed by GPT-6.1 Sol, and published a model guide for the GPT-6 family. It also shipped improved prompt caching for GPT-6, which matters more for bots than it sounds.
At the same time it began clearing out the previous generation. On 1 October 2026 several GPT-5 generation models, including GPT-5.3 Codex, GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.4 Nano, were deprecated for removal on 1 April 2027. The gpt-5.4-cyber model was removed from the API that same day.
Rather than reproduce a specification table that will be out of date within weeks, read OpenAI's own model guide for the current variants and their intended use. The decision framework below is what does not change.
The three things that actually decide it
Ignore benchmark tables. For a chat bot, three practical properties decide which model you should run.
- Latency. How long before the first words appear. On WhatsApp, a reply that takes six seconds feels like nobody is there, and the customer sends a second message or leaves.
- Cost per message. Multiply the realistic token count of one exchange by your monthly volume. This is the number that decides, not the headline rate.
- Instruction following. Whether it obeys a short system prompt about tone, length and what not to say. A model that writes four paragraphs when you asked for two sentences is the wrong model however clever it is.
Everything else, including context window size, matters far less than people assume. A WhatsApp conversation rarely exceeds a few thousand tokens, so a one million token context window is capacity you will never fill.
Prompt caching is the saving most bots miss
Support bots send almost the same thing every time. The system prompt sets the role, the tone, the rules, the shop details and the escalation policy, and it is identical on message one and message ten thousand. Only the customer's question changes.
Prompt caching means the provider charges less for that repeated prefix after the first time it sees it. OpenAI improved caching for GPT-6 in September 2026, and for a bot with a long system prompt this is a direct reduction in the bill with no change in quality.
To benefit from it, keep the stable part of your prompt at the beginning and the variable part at the end. A prompt that inserts the customer's name near the top defeats the cache, because the prefix is different every time. This is a small structural habit with a measurable result.
Test it on your own questions, not a benchmark
Published benchmarks tell you how a model handles graduate exams. They tell you nothing about whether it answers your return policy question correctly in Hinglish.
Build a list of twenty real questions from your own conversation history, including the awkward ones: a customer who gives a partial order number, someone asking in mixed Hindi and English, a complaint, a question your knowledge base does not cover. Run those twenty against two candidate models and read the answers side by side.
On Convo360 the model is a per agent setting, so this is a dropdown change and a run of your own test questions rather than a rebuild. Because you bring your own OpenAI key, you also see the real cost of that test in your own OpenAI dashboard, which makes the cost comparison concrete rather than theoretical. Our wider comparison of OpenAI, Claude and Gemini for chatbots covers choosing across providers rather than within one.
Pin the version, and diary the retirement
Once you have chosen, record the exact model id you are running against each agent. When a deprecation notice arrives naming a model, the slow part is almost never the switch. It is working out which of your agents is affected.
Then treat the retirement date as a real date. The GPT-5 generation models deprecated on 1 October 2026 are scheduled for removal on 1 April 2027, which sounds distant until it is next week. A retired model id does not quietly fall back to its replacement, it returns an error, and for a bot that means every conversation fails at once.
Convo360 reads the OpenAI deprecations page, along with Meta's, Anthropic's and Google's changelogs, four times a day and emails the owner when something is removed or repriced. That page is the one that predicts an outage. The company news feed, which is what most people follow, does not list model retirements at all.
Step by step
- Collect twenty real customer questionsPull them from your own conversation history, including awkward ones in mixed Hindi and English.
- Shortlist two models, not fivePick the smallest GPT-6 variant that plausibly fits, plus one step up as the comparison.
- Run the same questions through bothRead the answers side by side and judge correctness, length and tone rather than benchmark scores.
- Measure first-word latencyTime how long before words appear. Anything near six seconds reads as nobody being there on WhatsApp.
- Structure the prompt for cachingKeep the stable instructions at the start and variable details at the end so the cached prefix stays identical.
- Record the model id and its end dateNote which agent runs which model id, and diary the retirement date from the provider's deprecations page.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use the most capable GPT-6 model for my bot?
Usually not. A WhatsApp reply is two or three sentences drawn from your own knowledge base, so extra reasoning depth is paid for on every message and never shows up in the answer.
Which GPT-5 models are being removed?
Several GPT-5 generation models, including GPT-5.3 Codex, GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.4 Nano, were deprecated on 1 October 2026 for removal on 1 April 2027. The gpt-5.4-cyber model was removed immediately.
Does a bigger context window help a WhatsApp bot?
Rarely. A WhatsApp conversation seldom exceeds a few thousand tokens, so a very large context window is capacity you pay for and never fill. Retrieval from your knowledge base matters far more than raw context size.
How do I actually reduce my OpenAI bill?
Use a smaller model, shorten replies in the system prompt, and structure the prompt so the stable instructions sit at the start and can be cached across messages.
Can I change model without rebuilding my bot?
On Convo360 the model is a per agent setting, so it is a dropdown change. Your flows, knowledge base and provider key all stay exactly as they are.
