Indian numbers and regulatory notes on Twilio
Under phone number pricing, Twilio's India page lists a single row: international numbers, starting at $1.15 per month. No Indian local, national or mobile number type appears, and the receive calls column shows a price only for browser/app and SIP interface legs.
The SIP trunking page for India says the same thing in words. Twilio states it does not have voice enabled numbers in this locale, and points to numbers from over 90 other locales instead.
Twilio's regulatory guidelines for India list only a toll-free prefix, +91800. For both individuals and businesses, the address must be outside the country, and the page says no documentation is required. The pricing page shows no price for that number type, so confirm availability in the Twilio console before you plan around it.
What this means in practice:
- Outbound to India works on the listed rates. Your agent calls Indian mobiles and landlines from a Twilio number in another country.
- Inbound from Indian callers needs thought. A number from another country is an international call for your customer. The receive rate is set on that country's own Twilio pricing page.
- If you need an Indian number, Convo360 also connects Exotel, Plivo or your own SIP trunk. See choosing a telephony provider in India.
Whatever the provider, calls to Indian customers must respect TRAI DND rules, calling hours and consent.
What an AI voice agent is actually billed for
A normal Twilio call has one main line on the bill. An AI voice call has at least two, because the audio is also streamed live to the AI.
- The phone leg. Per minute, at the rate for the destination: $0.0496 to an Indian mobile or $0.0699 to an Indian landline.
- Media Streams. Twilio's docs describe this as streaming a call's raw audio over WebSockets, with a two-way version for a real-time conversation with an AI assistant. It is listed at $0.0044 per minute.
- The number. A monthly rental, from $1.15 for an international number.
- Optional extras. Recording at $0.0025 per minute plus storage, and answering machine detection at $0.0075 per call, only if you switch them on in your Twilio account.
Rounding matters. Twilio's docs say that by default it rounds up to the next minute, so a 25 second call shows as 1 minute on the invoice. A call of 2 minutes 10 seconds is billed as 3 minutes.
Free trial. Twilio's docs say you can sign up without a credit card. The trial gives product-specific free units, including 75 voice minutes, instead of a dollar balance. Trial accounts expire after 30 days and can call only verified recipients, so upgrade before you test with real customers.
A cost-per-call formula with illustrative minutes
The minutes below are ILLUSTRATIVE. Replace them with figures from your own call logs.
Formula
- Twilio cost per call (USD) = billed minutes × (phone leg rate + $0.0044 Media Streams)
- Add billed minutes × $0.0025 if you record, and $0.0075 if you use answering machine detection
- Monthly total = cost per call × calls + number rental
| Illustrative call | Working | Twilio cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3 billed minutes to an Indian mobile | 3 × ($0.0496 + $0.0044) | $0.162 |
| Same call with recording | $0.162 + 3 × $0.0025 | $0.1695 |
| 3 billed minutes to an Indian landline | 3 × ($0.0699 + $0.0044) | $0.2229 |
On these assumptions, 1,000 mobile calls of 3 billed minutes come to $162 of Twilio usage, plus the number rental.
This is only the telephony part. The agent's voice, speech recognition and LLM are billed by those providers on your own keys. For the full stack, read AI voice agent cost per minute in India.
How to connect Twilio in Convo360
Convo360 is BYOK. You bring your own Twilio account, Twilio bills you directly, and Convo360 adds zero markup on minutes. AI voice calls are part of the Pro plan at ₹2,999 per month, excluding 18% GST.
- In the Twilio console, upgrade from trial and buy a number with voice capability. Complete any regulatory details Twilio asks for that number's country.
- Copy your Account SID and Auth Token from the Twilio console.
- In Convo360, open Phone Numbers, choose to connect a number, select Twilio and paste the two values once. Keys are encrypted at rest.
- Create a voice AI agent, or install one from the Template Store, and set its voice and language.
- Assign the agent to the number and choose inbound, outbound or both. Inbound calls start from the inbound call trigger in the Flow Builder.
- Place a test call to your own phone. Adjust Call behaviour for background noise and interruptions, then launch a campaign.
If a call fails at Twilio's end, for example because of a wrong token or an empty balance, the Twilio console's error log shows the reason. Setup details are in the voice docs.
Ways to reduce your Twilio bill
Because Twilio bills per minute and rounds up, most savings come from shorter calls and fewer optional lines.
- Write a tight script. A call that ends at 1 minute 55 seconds is billed as 2 minutes. At 2 minutes 5 seconds it is billed as 3.
- Know your mix. On Twilio's list, Indian landlines cost more per minute than Indian mobiles. Clean landline numbers out of lists where a mobile is available.
- Switch off what you do not use. Recording, storage and answering machine detection are separate lines. Convo360 already transcribes every call, so record at Twilio only if you need the audio there.
- Release idle numbers. Number rental is charged monthly whether or not the number rings.
- Bring your own carrier. Twilio lists BYOC trunking at $0.0040 per minute if you already hold an Indian carrier contract. You can also connect a SIP trunk to Convo360 directly.
- Ask about volume. Twilio says volume pricing applies automatically at scale and offers committed-use discounts through sales.
- Compare inbound rates across providers. Twilio's India pages do not publish a receive rate for a local number. Providers such as Plivo and Exotel do charge for incoming calls at their own published rates, so check the current price list for whichever telephony provider handles your inbound-heavy use case.
Convo360 is not affiliated with Twilio. Prices can change at any time, and Twilio's own page is always the final word.
