Building a WhatsApp carousel template without writing any code
A WhatsApp carousel is a message with two to ten swipeable cards, each carrying its own image, text and buttons. Every card must have exactly the same structure, which is the rule most rejections come down to. Build it in a visual editor that enforces that before submitting to Meta.
- Between 2 and 10 cards, and every card must share the same structure.
- Card body text is capped at 160 characters, much shorter than a normal template.
- Every variable needs a sample value or Meta will reject the template.
- Carousels suit comparable items; use a catalogue for a full product range.
What a carousel is good for
A carousel shows a customer several options they can swipe through inside one WhatsApp message, each with a picture, a short description and its own buttons. It is the closest WhatsApp gets to a small shopfront inside a chat.
It works when the items are comparable and the choice is genuinely between them. Three room types at a hotel. Four courses at a coaching institute. Five pieces from a new collection. The customer swipes, compares and taps.
It works badly as a catalogue. Ten cards is the hard limit, so a brand with two hundred products cannot use a carousel to browse. For that you want the WhatsApp catalogue or a flow that asks a question and narrows things down.
The useful test is whether a human salesperson would lay these items side by side on a counter. If yes, a carousel fits. If they would ask a question first, build that question instead.
The rules Meta enforces
Carousels have stricter rules than ordinary templates, and most rejections come from the same handful.
- Two to ten cards. One card is not a carousel; eleven is refused.
- Identical structure on every card. If card one has an image and two buttons, every card needs an image and two buttons, of the same types in the same order.
- 160 characters of body text per card, which is considerably less than people expect.
- Sample values for every variable, so Meta's reviewer can see what the message will look like when filled in.
- All media the same type. You cannot mix images and videos across cards.
The identical-structure rule is the one that catches people. Adding a second button to just one card, because that product has an offer, invalidates the whole template.
Note also that the cards share one message header and one footer. Those belong to the message rather than to any card, so a common mistake is writing a header that only makes sense for the first product. Keep it generic enough to introduce all of them.
Building one in Convo360
Open WhatsApp Studio, create a template and choose the carousel type. You get a card editor rather than a JSON field: add a card, set its image, write the body, add the buttons, and duplicate it for the next product.
Duplicating is deliberate. Because every card must share a structure, starting each new card as a copy of the last one makes the correct thing the easy thing.
As you build, Convo360 checks the rules that Meta will check: card count, matching structure across cards, the 160-character limit, missing sample values and mixed media types. Problems appear as plain sentences while you are editing rather than as a rejection two days later.
That matters more than it sounds. A rejected template is not just a delay; repeated rejections from one business attract attention, and the review queue is slower the second time.
Writing cards that actually get tapped
160 characters is roughly two short sentences. That constraint is a gift if you use it properly.
Lead with what the item is and one reason to care. Leave the price in if it is a selling point and out if it needs explanation. Do not repeat the product name in the body when it is already visible in the image.
Make the buttons do different things across the range only in their labels, never in their types. A URL button and a quick reply button on different cards is exactly the structural mismatch that gets templates rejected.
Photograph the items consistently. Carousels are viewed at small size while scrolling, and a set of images with different backgrounds, crops and lighting reads as untidy even when each photograph is good on its own.
Think about the order. Most customers swipe through two or three cards and stop, so the item you most want to sell belongs first, not the cheapest one. Putting an entry-level product first to seem approachable usually means your best product is never seen.
Sending it, and to whom
A carousel is a template, so the normal rules apply: it needs approval before first use, and outside the twenty-four hour window it must be a template of the right category.
Most carousels are marketing, which is the most expensive category and the one most likely to affect your quality rating. Segment carefully. A carousel of bridal sets to people who enquired about bridal sets performs well; the same message to your whole contact list collects blocks.
Convo360 paces broadcast sends and caps the daily volume as a proportion of your current messaging tier, so a large carousel campaign cannot quietly push you past your limit. If Meta signals a quality problem mid-campaign it pauses and retries rather than pressing on.
Common rejections and what they mean
| Rejection | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| Invalid format | Cards do not share the same structure |
| Missing example | A variable has no sample value |
| Content violation | Promotional claim, or contact details in the body |
| Media error | Mixed types, or an image that failed to upload |
If a template is rejected, read Meta's reason carefully before changing anything. Resubmitting a guess wastes another review cycle, and Convo360 shows the full reason rather than a summary for exactly that purpose.
Build the first carousel with three cards and simple buttons to learn the cycle, then expand. A rejection on a three-card template is quick to diagnose; one on a ten-card template with four variables is not.
Keep your approved carousels in a small library and reuse them with different variable values rather than creating new templates for every campaign. Each new template is a review cycle and a risk, and a carousel whose text is parameterised can serve a new collection without being resubmitted.
Step by step
- Check the carousel fitsBetween 2 and 10 comparable items a customer would genuinely choose between. More than 10 needs a catalogue or a narrowing question.
- Create the templateWhatsApp Studio → new template → carousel. Build the first card completely before adding any others.
- Duplicate the first cardCopy it for each item so the structure stays identical, then change only the image, the text and the button labels.
- Fill in every sample valueEach variable needs an example, or Meta rejects the template without reviewing the content.
- Fix the warnings before submittingConvo360 flags card count, structure mismatches, the 160-character limit and mixed media while you edit.
- Send to a segment, not everyoneCarousels are usually marketing templates. Target people who asked about that category to protect your quality rating.

Frequently asked questions
How many cards should a carousel have?
Three to five works best in practice. Two feels thin, and past six most customers stop swiping, so the later cards get very little attention regardless of how good the products are.
Can cards have different buttons?
Different labels and different destinations, yes. Different button types or a different number of buttons, no. Every card must share the same structure or Meta rejects the whole template.
Can I use a video instead of an image?
Yes, but all cards must then use video. Mixing images and videos across cards is one of the most common causes of a rejection that is hard to diagnose from Meta's message.
How long does approval take?
Usually minutes to a few hours, occasionally longer during busy periods. Build and submit a day or two before a campaign rather than on the morning you intend to send.
Do carousels cost more to send?
No. Meta charges by conversation category, not by the richness of the message, so a carousel costs the same as a plain marketing template to the same recipient.
